v1.5.6 Update and 2.0 Alpha

v1.5.6 Update

Today’s update fixes the MangaStream issue, and removes support for Manga-Haven.

You can get this update here.

v2.0 Preview

I am  making available an early preview of Manga Reader v2.0. I haven’t started working on the new version of Manga Creator 2.0, so it is not included. There is no online explorer mode is this preview. It is however a much better offline manga or comic reader. To be able to read your online mangas with this reader, you will have to open them with the previous version and save them in the wgma format.

More archive formats are also supported. Please report any issues with rar (or other formats) archives. All known issues should be fixed. Let me know if they are not.

You will need to have .Net Framework 4 installed.

Get Manga Reader 2.0 Alpha here.

  1. Ever since upgrade 1.5.5 I haven’t been able to open rar files directly with manga reader. Even though I go to “open with” it never accepts it. THis is also true for 2.0 Alpha. I wish you could add the option to integrate manga reader with explorers, so that when I right click on rar or zip files, the option to “open with Manga Reader 2.0” will show up.

    Thanks, Nico

  2. Hi,

Manga Reader is my favourite tool for reading Manga(s?) and CBZ/CBR Archives at all. However, there are two small points I’d like to critize and I ask you to keep in mind it are small issues to me.

First thing is that graffiti-like font. It’s hard to read and doesn’t fit in the clean, clear look of the application. One could even say it even looks a bit childish and fits in the image that “Anime iz 4 kidz”. I recommend to replace it with a font more pleasant to the eye, like one of Vista/7’s system fonts.

Second point is that filler page which is displayed when the subsequent page is a “double page” (like 1280×700 instead of 700×1280). I would prefer to insert a blank page (or “please click to continue”) instead of the app icon and “This manga is presented to you by…”.
When I’m using Manga Reader together with friends they believe that it’s adware when the filler page appears. Some also say it’s weird to “advertise” a product you already have downloaded.
Well, I wouldn’t say it that way, but the current solution is a bit disturbing. In some cases you get the “this Manga is presented to you…” all, say, five pages and then you think “daaaammmmnnnn”.

Please don’t take what I said as offensive. I consider manga Reader as the best viewer for image archives and really love it. I’m just giving you my honest thoughts to improve it even further. I apologize if the “issues” have been “fixed” in the alpha, but I’m reluctant to use alpha software.

The last thing is “Science Fiction”, I suppose, but what I’d love would is a property handler for the Windows Explorer which could read XML-Files inside the image archives. You’d be able to see thing like author, title, page count etc within Windows Explorer. The file information could be indexed (allowing quick searches) and even be useful for Windows 7’s library feature. And that would be a nice addition to Manga Reader’s shell extension.

Again, this is just an idea and the other stuff I mentioned bugs me more.

Thanks for reading and thanks for your work on an excellent application.

  3. @B. Robins, great feedback, I’ll fix the issues whenever I get the chance.

  4. is anyone having trouble with mangafox?

  5. Great work, we owe you alot.

  6. its good to have 2.0 as viewer, but can you lower to dotNet req, coz I use 3dsMax and when dotNet 4.0 installed , my scene got blank

    thank

  7. Well… I opened a .rar with Mangareader, but I close the program before it finishes opening the file and… the file disappeared!! And no, it’s not in the recycle bin. Actually, I can’t find it

  8. This happened with Mangareader 1.5.6, and twice 😦

  9. Hi!
I have few interesting questions for you, Admin.
Could you contact me via email?
    Thanks

  10. Used manga reader on my HP netbook. When I rotated it 90 degrees, the manga page spills out of the screen and can not read 1/6 of the page width on the right side.

And on the left side is a blue column of blank and the bubble of manga reader.

Is there a way of placing the page without margin or borders?

On the naruto page you have on top of this webpage, you see a blue column on the left side of the page. Could this be removed?

    Thanks

this is the error i get when i try to jump chapters
It will be cool if you could fix it.

PS : i opened an image folder for a manga file like mga
PS2 : and well the the button to open it into manga creator didnt work even if i pasted merged manga reader 2 with manga creater

  13. Checked this “can’t open rar” warnind, and it seems to be true.

Also, I think you should separete this into to versions, one for offline-only and the other for all-in purpose.

  14. ps: sorry for the typo

  15. Updated to 1.5.6, and I think that an “update” option would be useful during installing.

  16. Hi nice program I try v.2.0 alpha this days and it’s nice but i found some bugs. x64_w7 the system and a lot of free memory and cpu’s when i use it

First : After the image that you put about your program next is becoming large and can’t be unzoomed it’s a little bit annoying this ad and second the bug after that too. I appreciate the program but this ad is an annoying.

Second : I used the program to read about 20 .cbr 8-12mb each and this start bugging after each one opened I reset the program and it happened on the next one.

Thank You for all of your work.

  17. Hi
Always happy to see that you’re still improving this program that I use and love so much.

Have you considered adding mangareader.net to the online manga explorer thingy? It’s a great website and has almost everything.

Thank you for your good work!

  18. I am loving 2.0. I download most of my manga and 2.0 is perfect. I cannot wait for it to be complete.

  19. Right. This is now the first manga player that might end up replacing MMCE that I currently use. I really appreciate the image scaling quality increase from 1.5.x to 2.0!

One request though: possibility of 1 page advance in 2 page view. Sometimes the 2 page view gets misaligned from what it is supposed to be and there doesn’t seem to be any simple way to re-align the 2 page view…

  20. Plz help. i downloaded the net framework and everything, it was previously working. many thanks in advance

  21. I so badly want 2.0 to be released with online explorer included, can’t wait for that to happen! 😀

  22. I recently find a new manga website, there you can read free manga, mobile manga

  23. I believe mangastream has stopped working again

  24. I’ve read around 800 chapters of manga using the 2.0 by now. It works marvelously.

    Issues that came up:
Errors while trying to get to a different page on a manga directly (only next and prev page work for me)

    (I use double page view)
And when there is a double page, it automatically splits the page into 2 single pages for which it then goes out of its way to make them appear one before the flip and one after the flip. (Really annoying when an awesome drawing is there, but you can only see half of it) >.<

Other than that I had no problems at all 🙂

  25. What words… Super, brilliant thought

  26. I’ve tried the 2.0 version. There’s a couple things I liked better in the past versions. Like when I resize the window because I’ll read while doing other stuff, or when I’ll zoom in, the pages would recenter around mouse pointer. In the 2.0, there’s sidebar that you scroll, they’re not doing it for me. The recenter thingy was more easy to work with. For the rest, I like it a lot!

  27. @L’Empotée,

You can go to the display options and change the scaling mode to Automatic, and it will work like in the previous versions.

  28. When I try to watch manga online over MangaFox every page of that chapter will be the first two pages (like 23 times the same images)

    Any way to fix that?

  29. “When I try to watch manga online over MangaFox every page of that chapter will be the first two pages (like 23 times the same images)
    Any way to fix that?”

    -Yeah, same problem here. wassup?

  30. The only problem I can see is that when an image’s width exceeds its height, Manga Reader splits the image in half and reorders the halves so that the pages are out of order. An easy solution would be to change the display settings so that when an image that is wider than it is tall is displayed, the reader only displays one image. This is an option in an excellent comicbook reader for linux, Comix. It shouldn’t be too hard to emulate.

  31. if i try to open cbz or cbr or zip file directly with mangareader alpha following error msg is gettin displayed………

  32. already try v2.0, I think its good, but its too fast when sliding betwen one page to another, could be good if its slower a little bit.

  33. Is this Project still alive or not?

I wait for the Final 2.0 it is very cool

    pleas keep on working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    and thanks for your work

  34. In version 2.0 gives error when I jump chapters.

  35. The old version doesn’t work for me anymore when trying to read mangas online, when will 2.0 be released and the problem solved? 😦

  36. I suggest that adding
    1. auto-next chapter at the end of book
    2. mouse wheel fuction (move up and down) then (end – either next page or previous page)

anything else ur program really great and use little RAM comsuption
    cheers!

  37. 1.5.6 dasnt work i can’t update i have a messije to put a disk in to my cd so that i can install 1.5.6

  38. @Admin
to Admin, please add at least a beta release of 2.0 that fixes the online issue with 1.5.6 on mangafox (they changed their naming convension, leading to only the first page repeating for every single displayed page.)

  39. Are this project still on work. This is the best Manga Reader software that i’ve ever tried.

  40. is this project still alive or already dead?

  41. sweet, I love Rekidai sōri sokkin no kokuhaku . This is def the best manga reader I’ve used, they go well together. Thanks

  42. does admin is dead? 3 years without any news or update.. R.I.P

  43. I still use this program on a daily basis to read my mangas. I’ve read over 5000 chapters of manga in the v2 alone. Please bring out the next update which fixes the double page split issue + supports bookmarks to allow reading at the bookmarked page ❤

really hope you'll continue to update this!

  44. It’d be nice if it would open the next zip or whatever in a folder rather than making me select a new one each time I finish a chapter.

  45. Please don’t drop this project, It awesome and I’m looking forward for the next update, btw I use V2 and v1.5.6 and both of them I can’t use the online manga exploder, any sollution ?

  46. You understand thus significantly relating to this matter, produced me in my opinion consider it from a lot of varied angles. Its like men and women don’t seem to be interested unless it is something to do with Lady gaga! Your individual stuffs great. Always take care of it up!

  47. If you do not work on this anymore, just upload the goddamn source-code to SourceForge and let others work on it.

  48. Please don’t drop Manga Reader
i beging you, please don’t drop it
at least if you don’t want contiue, share codes with MangaReader users

  49. it didn’t worked well for me. sometimes it kind of hangs.

  50. This program is the best for comics and manga. I’ve never used a better one. Great job.

  51. This is still by far the best program to read mangas with… please start continue it ❤

  52. This guy srsly needs to continue this shit… the site is not dead so i guess, it might start.. but after 2 years of no activity, my hopes are getting lower

  53. Mr. Admin: great project, congrats.
I’m currently using the V2, and in my opinion it is missing just two thing to get to “perfection” for an off-line reader: Custom zoom & Enhanced Keyboard Control.

For custom zoom I mean: where you can choose either automatic or fixed scaling there could be a third option, where you set a fixed height for the page (like in pixels, not in percentage). That way, pages can always start with a reasonable size, not too small (as in automatic to screen size) or so much variable (as in fixed… some pages get HUUUGE). Not so critical…

The second, which in my view is way more critical is just to add a scrolling based on the keyboard (not only on mouse panning). I suspect you already started this from the “scroll view to DIRECTION”, but I don’t think it does work…
The pinnacle would be: being able to read off-line in the same way you can control an online reader: having something that is a little bigger than the screen and being able to scroll up/down just with the keyboard.

I know it has been sometime since you last worked on this, but don’t give up! As I said: it is almost perfect (at least in my view)!
BTW: if you do post the code in sourceforge / bitbucket / github, you can expect a fork from me =3

    Cheers!

good topic. I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more.
